Define the portfolio question before selecting a platform
An institution may want an initial financed emissions baseline, a repeatable reporting process or better information for engagement with portfolio companies. These objectives are related, but they call for different project boundaries and deliverables. We recommend specifying the business units, portfolios, reporting date and financial activities included in the assignment. Identify the intended audience and distinguish internal analysis from an external disclosure. This helps the project team determine which methods and evidence need closer attention.
The PCAF Global GHG Accounting and Reporting Standard provides guidance for emissions associated with financial activities and separates financed, facilitated and insurance-associated emissions into different parts. Do not assume one calculation method covers every activity in a diversified institution. Ask the assessment team to map the proposed scope to the relevant guidance and identify any exclusions. This page describes a scoping approach, not an investment recommendation or a statement that a particular reporting obligation applies to your organization.
Build an asset inventory that can be reconciled
Before requesting emissions data, establish what is in the portfolio. We suggest preparing a controlled asset list with identifiers, counterparties, asset classifications, financial information relevant to the selected method and reporting dates. Record where each field originates and who can resolve discrepancies. A sustainability dataset that cannot be reconciled with the financial records used for the study will be difficult to defend, even if its emissions factors are carefully selected.
Pay attention to duplicate names, group relationships and changes in ownership or exposure during the reporting process. Agree how the project will handle missing identifiers and inconsistent counterparty names. Keep the version of the portfolio extract used for the calculation so that reviewers can reproduce its coverage. These are recommended data-preparation controls, not assumed software features. The proposal should explain which reconciliation and mapping work is included, what your internal teams must supply and how unresolved records will be represented in the final coverage summary.

Distinguish reported emissions from estimated information
Counterparty information can vary in boundary, reporting period and completeness. A reported total may cover a corporate group that does not match the entity in your asset register. It may omit relevant emissions categories or use a different period from the financial information. We recommend recording these differences rather than treating every published number as equally suitable. Keep the original disclosure reference and explain the choice when several figures are available.
Where reported information is unavailable, an estimate may be part of the selected methodology. Make its basis visible, including the activity or financial inputs, factor source and limitations. CCDB provides emission factor resources with China-focused data and scenario information that may be relevant to scoped accounting work. Dataset selection still needs technical judgment. A general industry factor should not be described as a measurement of a specific company. Review coverage and data quality alongside the emissions total so that users understand what the assessment can support.
Agree the method and reporting basis explicitly
The accounting brief should state which methodological guidance and version the team will use, how asset categories will be treated and which inputs drive attribution. Avoid relying on an unexplained default formula. We recommend asking for a sample calculation using a representative asset, including the source of every input and the reasoning behind the method. This gives finance and sustainability teams a common object to review before the process is expanded across a portfolio.
PCAF's published standard page identifies separate guidance for different financial activities and supplementary forward-looking metrics. A financed emissions inventory should not silently combine different measures into one headline total. Keep exploratory scenarios and any separate metrics clearly labeled. The GHG Protocol Corporate Standard remains a useful reference for the institution's organizational inventory, but that inventory is a distinct assignment. The project should explain how operational reporting and portfolio reporting are organized without implying that one replaces the other or guarantees regulatory compliance.
Test software against a representative portfolio sample
Carbonstop's official financial institutions page describes support for financed emissions assessment, baseline understanding, hotspot identification and progress tracking. Its broader Ccloud platform offers carbon accounting capabilities and delivery approaches including SaaS, customized software and on-premises deployment. Specific portfolio coverage, reporting formats, integrations and security requirements need confirmation in the proposed scope. Bring an anonymized or otherwise appropriately shareable sample that includes both straightforward records and known data gaps.
Our recommended evaluation follows an asset from the original portfolio record through data matching, calculation and review. Ask how a revised counterparty figure or changed financial input would affect the output. Discuss access rights, evidence retention, export requirements and responsibility for methodological updates. If AI-assisted preparation is proposed, require human review of suggested mappings and assumptions. A useful demonstration should show the limits of the available information as clearly as the final visualization. Purchasing software does not establish that a disclosure is independently assured or accepted by a particular authority.
Use the assessment to prioritize engagement questions
A portfolio result can help frame questions for further investigation, but the largest estimated value is not automatically the most actionable engagement priority. We recommend considering data quality, business context and the institution's relationship with the counterparty alongside the result. A large estimated contribution may call first for better information. A well-documented contribution may support a more specific conversation about the counterparty's operations or transition plans. Keep those interpretations separate from the accounting calculation itself.
When tracking change, explain the drivers. A portfolio total can move because of underlying company emissions, portfolio composition, financial inputs, data improvements or methodological changes. Without that explanation, a lower number may be misread as evidence of real-world emissions reductions. Carbonstop's consulting services include accounting, reporting and reduction-planning support that can be scoped to the institution's needs. Agree how the deliverable will distinguish measured data, estimates and interpretation, and which internal stakeholders need to review the narrative before it is used externally.
Prepare a scoped request for software and advisory support
A useful first inquiry describes your institution, the financial activities to be assessed, the relevant portfolios and the intended reporting output. Include a field list or sample asset extract, information about existing counterparty emissions data and any methodology already adopted. Explain access constraints and whether independent assurance is expected. These details help distinguish a software evaluation from a data-reconstruction project or a broader advisory assignment.
We recommend agreeing a pilot with explicit acceptance criteria: reconciled coverage, traceable inputs, documented method choices and a reviewable output. The proposal should identify responsibilities for data collection, mapping, calculation, quality review and disclosure preparation. Contact Carbonstop to discuss the combination of software, factor data and professional support appropriate to your brief. Delivery timing and fees depend on scope and information readiness. No platform should be treated as a substitute for your institution's own governance, or as a guarantee of a particular investment, regulatory or assurance outcome.
Questions, answered.
Is financed emissions accounting the same as our office carbon inventory?
No. An operational inventory assesses the institution's own organizational activities, while financed emissions accounting addresses defined financial activities using the relevant methodology. They may be part of the same sustainability program, but they need distinct boundaries, data and review decisions.
Can a project begin when counterparties do not report emissions?
An initial assessment can identify coverage gaps and consider estimation methods permitted by the selected approach. Estimates should remain distinguishable from reported data, with documented sources and limitations. The brief should include a plan for reviewing data quality and improving material gaps.
Does a lower portfolio total prove real-world emissions fell?
Not on its own. Portfolio composition, financial inputs, methodology and data updates can affect the total. We recommend a change analysis that explains these drivers separately from changes in underlying counterparty emissions before drawing conclusions about progress.
